Prescriptions & Prescribing Explained

This course is designed to enable delegates to understand the development and classification of medicines together with the role and responsibilities of the prescription clerk/administrator.

This course can be delivered as a face to face session or over zoom.

The course will help delegates to ensure that their roles contributes to the safe, efficient and cost effective running of the general practice prescribing process.

Course Contents

The objectives of the course are to enable delegates to be able to:

  • Understand how medicines are developed;
  • Understand the terms generic, brand and branded generic and their use;
  • Recognise classification of medicines;
  • Determine medicines and prescription terminology and abbreviations;
  • Recognise legal aspects of prescribing;
  • Identify the journey of a prescription;
  • Understand the role of the general practice prescription clerk/administrator and the responsibilities and limitations of the role including confidentiality, safety and security, reducing medicine waste and competence to undertake the role.
